Dorsey Architects Inc.
A new K-5 elementary school designed to accommodate 500 students which consist of a two story classroom wing, gymnasium, Cafeteria, Computer Lab, Music Room and a Media Center. All of the noise areas were group together such as the gymnasium, and Cafeteria. The Media Center is placed between the administration area and classroom wing. The construction consists of cmu backup with modular brick veneer for the exterior and all cmu wall partitions for the interior. We gave the building a residential appeal to fit within the neighborhood by providing gable masonry parapets along the classroom wing to hide the HVAC units and which blended in with the hipped roof over the administrative area. We provided a canopy drop-off for cars at the main entrance and a bus canopy drop-off. We also provided brick on the interior wall areas such as the Media Center and the Lobby, We also designed a memorial plaza on site around the existing grave of Mrs. Carrie A. Tuggle the school’s founder, which consist of a brick veneer retaining wall along the hill side. Also, we provided a masonry clock tower over the main entrance and a second tower which is an abstraction of the original school tower. Also, we provide a FEMA rated safe room to accommodate 500 people below grade which takes advantage of the sloping site at the rear. The construction cost was $10.2 Million. Completed in 2013
